What about a Coil Bigger than the WOT
for my Sovereign or Explorer

Why BIGGER isn't always better!

There's been a lot of talk about an even bigger coil for the Sovereign and Explorer than the WOT.

In fact, I have had emails asking if COILTEK will be making a larger coil than the WOT. The answer is "NO!" and for a very good reason! It wouldn't work as well as the WOT coil.

Bigger is not necessarily better. If it were, COILTEK would make a larger coil than the WOT coil.

When the coil, now known as the WOT, was in the design phase it was not a matter of arbitrarily picking a size out of the sky and saying, "YEAH, let's make it that big!"

The size of the WOT was determined because testing showed that was the optimum size you could go without reaching the point of diminishing returns.

15 inches was the size that produced the best depth to size ratio.

We only have a limited amount of power given the size of the power cell in our detector with which to drive the coil. However, the really critical consideration is that the larger the coil the more ground and mineralization it has to deal with.

There is a point at which a coil can become so large that amount of the mineralization it has to handle overwhelms the capacity of the detector to deal with it. The net result is that it loses its sensitivity to targets.

There is a delicate balance that must be considered when determining optimum coils size so that the coil handles mineralization efficiently and yet maintains its sensitivity.

COILTEK has found out, primarily through their development of coils for the big gold machines, the SD series and GP Extreme, that there is a point of diminishing returns in terms of depth.

COILTEK is able to build larger coils for these machines because the battery is a large, carry on your back, 6 volt 12 amp hour lead gel acid unit.

What was discovered is that when starting with a 5 X 10 Joey coil up to an 18 inch coil, size to depth increases significantly. The larger the coil the greater the depth!

When you get larger, like the 24 inch, the 21 X 27, or the 20 X 40, the depth increase is very small compared to the 18 inch. The primary use for using these coils is to cover more ground looking for nugget patches. Coverage is fantastic, depth is not much more, and sensitivity to small gold falls off as a result of looking at so much mineralized dirt at once.

So, when deciding to manufacture a coil for a detector, you do not arbitrarily draw straws to determine what size coils you are going to make.

Proper coil design demands research to determine what size will provide optimum performance, NOT what size will be the biggest!

So just because it's bigger, doesn't mean it's better, at least when it comes to coils.

It would take some kind of magic technology to produce a coil larger than the WOT that would out perform the WOT coil!

KellyCo's Excelerator coils?

I've been "away" from these forums for a while but haven't seen anything posted about the excelerator coils from KellyCo. Has anyone compared them to the CoilTek's and others and how do they compare? I'm primarily interested in the 14 and 18" coils, and I've only seen Ron's post a while back about the 14". This would be mainly for the beach rather than inland soil hunting.

used his Exc. a few times,on the wet beach,at minus tides,Myself the Wot.We are trying to compare readings. The Exc. shows no big difference yet. We are not overly impressed with it YET,BUT,we are going to give it a few more hunts this weekend.MINUS TIDES this weekend, and hoping to prove its performance.Purchased the Exc. mostly for the wet beach. The thought pattern has been leaning towards selling the Exc.coil, unless it proves different!! Kinda turns you off, when you FINALLY recieve it,after 2 month's of waiting, then install it,and the plastic mounting bolt strips, because the ears won't flex enough to tighthen so it does'nt flop around like a giant pancake or hoolahoop!! Then order another plastic bolt, and wait another week for it! Personally i'am for the WOT,or the Sunray 12". Will update if and when the Exc earns it keep in the near future! Need those Minus Tides!! :) :)

And I still own the WOT. In MY opinion, the Excelerator is NO competition for the WOT. Maybe that is why you see so few posts lauding the performance of the Excelerator. Just my opinion.

Thanks Cap, that's kinda what I was thinking. I have a WOT for my Sov, and it's of nice quality. The price is about the same, but knowing that Doc stands behind the product, and KellyCo's reputation seems to make the decision pretty easy...WOT it is :)

According to our customers, it's either a Sun Ray X-12 or WOT that they prefer. None have been pleased with any of the Excellerators. The only two reasons I hear are: Lack of depth or Lack of Quality. I can't tell you any more than that Jeff. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
